Scientists discover bodily sensations give rise to conscious feelings

on 04 September 2018
Clearly we are nutsAt the end of the day, there is peace!

While Love may make the world go around; the ability for us to learn how to reproduce at will helps to keep us grounded. So, the perfect place to be, and hypnosis will take you there, is to have your feet firmly rooted on Mother Earth and your head in the Clouds . . .

The problem of being a gofa within a pharmacy!

For many years I have been telling clients that the emotion we are genetically engineered to seek, is the emotion we call love. Love, as a chemical experience, is a consequence created by infusions of neural chemicals in the form of neurotransmitters, hormones, peptides etc, e.g dopamine, serotonin, epinephrine, oxytocin, endorphins and, also, acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is kind of like an agent/manager that brings it all together. Certain behaviours initiate the production of these chemicals and those behaviours develop into habits that encourage the recycling of the behaviour. Simply put, the brain is a pharmacy, our problem though, is that we are not pharmacists and the ways in which we live, often cause some of our issues!

The primary cause, it is believed, is procreation, i.e. survival of the species, for if we do not mate, we do not produce and, eventually, that's it! But there is more to it than that because the more we experience these feelings, the more, well, we become. The ancients worked this out thousands of years ago and it is steeped in many religions, cultures and ways of life, e.g. The Buddha was teaching the path to enlightenment approx. 2500 years ago. Then there are the many forms of meditation, spiritual retreats and, more recently, mobile device retreats (a fuzzy kind of logic). No matter what the method; inner calm and peace is the objective, for it is in that state of mental calmness that we find the pathway to experience the chemical correlates of love. And the only place you are going to find that love; is from within your own self!

This piece of research is interesting because it alludes to the inherent value that comes about as a consequence of finding, experiencing and replicating the behaviours that stimulate the presence of inner and (chemical) love. Sex, of course, is another way and when we first fall in love with someone, our body is flooded with these chemicals, in abundance, but that fades over time. For those of us, that are happily in a loving relationship, the current is still flowing, we just lose the frequency of the surges! In some sense love, in a relational context, develops into having more of a rhetorical value rather than being an emotional experience. But the very nature, structure and purpose of love, chemically speaking, is to promote survival of the species, and, through the many beneficial side effects of these chemical surges, a perpetual state of wellness/inner calm emerges! Stress is the solvent that makes it come unstuck!

The other side of this research is also interesting because it bears witness the deleterious side effects of being perpetually stressed and/or anxious. And I would guess there are so many more of those moments these days, as opposed to the days when our ancestors went out to catch lunch; complete with club and spear!

These days we aspire to have, position, status, power and great wealth and, once we acquire it; we have a lot to lose (enter abundant stressors). On the other hand our forefathers, and it wasn't that long ago, had very little; some had even less than that and when you have little, I guess you have little to lose. Of course, they too had their stressors but I believe they were more tuned into their emotional and spiritual selves and just did not have the kind of pressures that we experience today. In fact, looking back 60 years ago when I was a young boy the most modern thing we had back then was a 9 inch (225mm) black and white TV with 1 channel, the BBC. later we upgraded to 2 channels, ITV and I still have the memory of the TV man coming around to tune in the new channel. In those days you had to rent TVs, although I guess those rich folks down the road could afford one but, generally speaking, TVs were mostly rented and for the TV rental Companies (Rediffusion) it was a massive business.? It was the same with telephones, they were rented, the only difference though, was that they could not be bought, it wasn't until the 1980s when Margaret Thatcher dismantled the state-run industries that consumerism and competition really took off.

So, while I have just indulged in a trip down memory lane, it was a pleasant reminder that while we didn't have much by way of modern technology or the ability to instantly communicate, be it voice or video, with anyone, more or less anywhere. We actually did more face to face talk, we got to look at the world outside as we meandered our way on our journeys and despite all that we didn't have; there was a lot of really nice friendly people plenty of love and so much fun! I guess that's why they call them, "The Good Ol Days?"

Over the 18+ years, I have been doing hypnotherapy, it has been both a pleasure and a marvel to bear witness to the remarkable way in which the majority of my clients have been able to turn a tragedy into a triumph and the only thing they used; was their mind! The Research:

Humans constantly experience an ever-changing stream of subjective feelings that is only interrupted during sleep and deep unconsciousness. Finnish researches show how subjective feelings map into five major categories: positive emotions, negative emotions, cognitive functions, somatic states, and illnesses. All these feelings were imbued with strong bodily sensations.

"These results show that conscious feelings stem from bodily feedback. Although consciousness emerges due to brain function and we experience our consciousness to be "housed" in the brain, bodily feedback contributes significantly to a wide variety of subjective feelings," tells Associate Professor Lauri Nummenmaa from Turku PET Centre.

According to the researchers, emotions vividly colour all our feelings as pleasant or unpleasant. It is possible that during evolution, consciousness has originally emerged to inform the organisms and others around about tissue damage and well-being. This development may have paved for the emergence of language, thinking and reasoning.

"Subjective well-being is an important determinant of our prosperity, and pain and negative emotions are intimately linked with multiple somatic and psychological illnesses. Our findings help to understand how illnesses and bodily states in general influence our subjective well-being. Importantly, they also demonstrate the strong embodiment of cognitive and emotional states," says Nummenmaa.

The study was conducted in the form of an online questionnaire in which more than 1,000 people participated. The participants first evaluated a total of 100 feeling states in terms of how much they are experienced in the body and mind, and how emotional and controllable they are. Next, they also evaluated how similar the feelings are with respect to each other, and whereabouts in the body they are felt.
